Challenge:

Modern logistics companies are starting to increase focus to the sustainability of their supply chains. A practice also known as green logistics. In the wake of the climate change, they are challenged with:

  • Meeting EU emission regulations
  • Customers’ demand for sustainable products
  • Creating an efficient transport and distribution system that is environmentally- and also employee-friendly

VARTA® Solution:

A powerful and reliable battery like the VARTA® ProMotive AGM has a noticeably positive influence on greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and working conditions. It has two ways of helping fleets and their truck drivers lower fuel consumption and emissions, thus making the vehicle a more sustainable part of the supply chain, without losing the demanded comfort on board:

  • By reliably powering fuel saving functions
  • By allowing comfort functions to keep running even during engine-off phases

“An essential part of green logistics.“

“The right choice of battery technology can really be a major influence on idling times. We have used AGM batteries for about two years now. At the beginning we were sceptical and tested the new technology step by step. Soon we realized that AGM batteries could be discharged a lot deeper than conventional or gel batteries which we used before.“

“So, we trained our drivers to turn off their engines during their breaks. This way, they reduce idling but are still able to enjoy the battery operated comfort functions. This resulted in less fuel consumption.

Another positive effect: Since then we had no battery-related breakdowns anymore. Employee satisfaction and environmental protection go hand in hand for us. VARTA® AGM makes a contribution to both that should not be underestimated.”

Emissions are playing an increasingly important role as a quality feature of the logistics chain. Products that are offered as environmentally friendly are also expected to be transported with as few emissions as possible. So what exactly are these measures that can significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of a transport?

“First comes the right choice of vehicles, which must meet the highest emission standards. A low kerb weight, aerodynamics and the choice of tyres are also important factors in achieving low rolling resistance. Regular maintenance and inspection of the vehicles keeps them in good condition. Precise route planning and regular driver training with Eco Drive courses then lowers fuel consumption even further.”

what many people do not suspect: There is another important component in modern trucks that contributes significantly to lower fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions. And that is the battery. Most drivers are used to start the engine from time to time to power their electronic comfort functions when doing their weekly rest break of 45h. But engine idling consumes around 3 liter of fuel per hour in average and emits additional CO2 to the atmosphere. VARTA ProMotive AGM A1 batteries can significantly reduce this unwanted idling. This was validated by TÜV Nord in a comparison with the conventional Super Heavy Duty battery.

VARTA® ProMotive AGM – the choice for fleets investing in today’s and future logistics.

All the ProMotive AGM’s features combined enable a significantly longer product life cycle. Having to buy less batteries means saving resources, and energy - and not just when it is installed in the vehicle, but already during production. The manufacturing process of the VARTA® ProMotive AGM profits from 20 years of experience with the technology. It uses less energy and less water than comparable manufacturing methods. This makes the VARTA® ProMotive AGM the choice for fleets who are investing into green logistics.

With the development of electric and fuel-cell or hydrogen trucks, a new technology to further reduce the logistic sector‘s carbon footprint is on the horizon. Electric and fuel cell powered vehicles also have a 24V board net. The AGM battery is crucial to supply the electrical system and secures functions like light, brakes and steering. Due to its power and reliability, leading OE (Original Equipment) manufactures consider the VARTA® ProMotive AGM the perfect fit for future applications and the ideal companion for the coming e-Trucks.
